Gambist and cellist Thomas Fields was born in Minneapolis, where he grew up. After studying cello at Manhattan School of Music and Eastman School of Music, where he began his relationship with historical performance practice on cello and viola da gamba, he moved to Bremen, Germany in 2017 to continue his education at the University of the Arts with Hille Perl. He received further input on both viol and baroque cello from masterclasses with Paolo Pandolfo, Vittorio Ghielmi, Christophe Coin, Jaap ter Linden, and Viola de Hoog. He also studied musicology as a visiting student at the Central Music Conservatory in Beijing, China, where he deepened his interest in the artistic expression of musics across time and culture.

Thomas appears regularly as a soloist, chamber musician, and with orchestras in concert halls and churches, as well as performing in museums, historical spaces, and natural settings in the United States, China, and Europe. He is currently studying as a Meisterklassenstudent (Artist Diploma) for viola da gamba with Friederike Heumann at the Hochschule für Musik Würzburg.
